If you had any doubts about the great treasure that your Baptism is, look to the Baptism of Our Lord. There, with the utmost clarity do you see what has been done for and to you in the washing of regeneration. Heaven has been opened to you. Your guilt had shut you out of paradise. There would be no entrance for you until the Son of God stepped into the Jordan River and instituted all waters to be a blessed flood and a lavish washing away of sin. Baptized into Christ, your guilt has been washed away and now the gates of heaven are opened to you through the Blood of Jesus. You have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Helper and Comforter, who bestows the life of Christ upon you and sanctifies you, makes you holy. You are now the temple of the Holy Spirit who leads you and strengthens you by the Word of God so that you might walk in holiness and righteousness before God all your days and desire the truly good things of God. And God the Father has made you His own dear child. You call Him Father because He has adopted you into His holy family and given you His Name. You are not an enemy or even a slave or servant. You are son or daughter of the Most High God. His care for you is absolute. He will do everything and give you everything that is good and perfect for you. Your Baptism is truly your greatest treasure. Come and join your brothers and sisters in your Father’s house to be fed at His table and taught His Word.
