Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany

The storms of life are raging all around us.  Some are literally harsh weather events.  Others are ideological storms fought in the ballot box and in conversations.  Others are internal where dark clouds of death hang thick over our heads and raging waves of temptation threaten to draw us down to our destruction.  There seems to be no place to find solace, no place to go to find peace.  In this world that is tearing apart under the destructive power of sin, there is only one place where you will ever find peace – with Christ.  He alone has authority over the wind and the waves, over the nations, and over even death itself.  With Christ, even as everything around you is swirling and chaotic, you are safe.  You have nothing to fear.  He doesn’t simply bring calm, He Himself is the calm.  Because He has taken sin and death and buried them in His own tomb, letting them drag Him down to death instead of you and because He has risen triumphant from the dead, those who are baptized into Him and put their trust alone in Him have the peace that He has brought from God the Father.  Remain with Christ who remains with you in His Word and holy sacraments and none of the storms that gather around you will do you harm.  I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow as we gather with Christ to receive His peace.
