Adam needed nothing. God had given him total access to all of creation with the only exception being the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It doesn’t have that name because its fruit possessed mystical powers. Rather, in disobeying God’s Word concerning the tree, man would know what evil was by becoming evil himself. Adam knew what was good. He knew God. He knew God’s Word and will. The tree only was a source of that knowledge as Adam heeded God’s Word and didn’t eat from it. That required humility and faith, both of which Adam forsook as he abandoned God’s Word and became evil. Christ needed everything. The Spirit had driven Him out into the wilderness where He fasted for forty days. There God withheld all nourishment from Christ other than His Word and in that state of weakness, as opposed to Adam’s strength, Christ faced the temptation to turn from God’s Word, take what the Father had not given, and abandon the cross of our salvation. God’s Word is life. It is good. Do nor forsake it for the cheap thrills and pleasures of this world. They can’t bring you good. God is no liar. What He gives is enough and what He withholds you neither need nor have any claim to. Christ has restored you to God. He has cut out the lying tongue of Satan and He has given you the forgiveness of your sins. Hear the Word. Heed the Word. It is your food. It is your life. Let the motto of your life be “It is written…” I look forward to seeing you this coming Lord’s Day.
