Sixth Sunday after Trinity

Our flesh loves to sin. Whether we have been baptized or not, the desires of the flesh remain. It is the great torment of the Christian – the struggle of knowing and wanting the good but also being drawn to the bad.  It would be wonderful if after baptism we no longer desired anything about sin, if we hated it with every fiber of our being, if the thought of disobeying the Law of God made us physically ill.  But it doesn’t.  We like sin. We make excuses to indulge in it. We call it something else. But Christ did not set us free so that we could run back into slavery. We haven’t been forgiven so that we can simply continue in our sin. With Christ, we have died to sin. The great lie has been exposed and we have been forgiven for having taken part in it. Sin is death. Every sin, no matter how small you think it is, every transgression of the Law, is deadly poison.  Flee from sin into the merciful arms of Jesus. Come, you who have found yourself doing the evil that you don’t want to do, and let Jesus break the chains that bind you. I look forward to seeing all of you this coming Lord’s Day.
